SciAnda (Changshu) Pharmaceuticals, Ltd. employs the same environment,health and safety (EH&S) inspection system as that of the parent company. The rules implemented are established by the Eight Responsible Care Guiding Principles provided by the Chemical Manufacturers’ Association (CMA), USA. The eight principles are: community awareness and emergency response, process safety, employee safety and health, laboratory safety, transportation safety, contractor safety, industrial waste reduction and product management.
To ensure the safety and health of the employees, the company has established isolated substance processing facilities designed and operated in strict adherence to the standards established by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), including providing material safety data sheets (MSDS) and pertinent toxicity databases.
Inaddition, to satisfy the requirements of chemical reactivity hazards and safety assessment for process scale-up, the company utilizes laboratory equipment suchas differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and toxicity prediction software (Derek for Windows).
In regards to employee safety and health, the company has also created a computer-based data filing system in accordance with the requirements of the US OSHA guidelines for maintaining long-term individual health records. These will facilitate direct comparisons with safety statistics from the US chemistry engineering and pharmaceutical industries.
Waste disposal
SciAnda (Changshu) plant’s waste handling design and operation were initially reviewed by governmental officials. The company agrees with their environmental impactassessment and will adhere to the environmental protection measures proposed.
Prior to manufacturing a new product, a Process Hazards Assessment meeting is convened to analyze and discuss the handling of waste. Biodegradable wastewater is sent to the waste water processing facility for pre-treatment. This system utilizes aerobicbiochemical membrane process technology, and the wastewater is discharged along with domestic waste water for centralized processing at the off-site Binjiang Waste Water Treatment Plant after it complies with its discharge standards.
The sludge is then sent to the Jiangsu Bokang Industrial Solid Waste Treatment Company Ltd. for incineration, along with the plant’s hazardous and solid waste. From time to time, this waste may also be sent to other qualified companies for processing. Air emissions originating from the laboratory or production plants, such as organic vapors and acidic gases, are scrubbed in a waste gas processor and tested before being discharged into the atmosphere.
The company’s environmental protection facility has been functioning without compliance issues since its establishment, and its objective is to ensure long-term and continuous dischargesthat continue to meet all regulatory standards.
